Clientelism, Tribalism, and Ethnic Conflict in Africa

In this essay I will firstly examine and break down the components of the question. I will separate and clarify the meaning of Clientelism, Tribalism and Ethnic Conflict and deal with each of these as separate enterties. Although I will argue each of them on a separate basis. I aim also to show the complex interlinked relationships between the three themes, and argue that because of this the central argument of the question is not easily agreed or disagreed with. My main argument however, will be to disagree with the central question and advocate that Clientelism was a part of Africa's tradition long before any notion of modernity and colonial influence was present in the continent. I will provide empirical evidence, which supports the inherent presence of Clientelism, and also show how it has strong links with Tribalism, in both its history and modern perpetuation. Tribalism however is a different matter and I agree with the central statement and advocate that modern African tribalism and notions of ethnicity were mainly a direct result of colonial imposed modernity restructuring. For the final part of my answer I will provide an argument that African ethnic conflict lies somewhere between the two extremes, that it was present in African society before colonial modernity and it was further exacerbated by the restructuring that colonialism brought about. In my conclusion I will further justify my arguments and advocate a thesis for future development in Africa on tribalism, ethnic conflict and clientelism. Whether clientelism, tribalism and ethnic conflict were a product not of tradition but of modernity in Africa and a type of development is a difficult and complex question in many respects, but one to which I have a strong argument. To study this it would be practical to firstly define what I shall mean by modernity and â€Å"the type of development† in relation to the main statement, as it will form the crux of my argument. By modernity and type of development in Africa I will be focusing on colonialism and justifying whether clientelism, tribalism and ethnic conflict were present before the arrival of colonialization or whether they emerged from the new society that restructuring colonial development brought with it. I believe through looking at African society in its modern context and studying empirical data that it is evident to determine whether the three main themes of this essay where present before or a after product. What is not so clear however is the complex linkages between and the contexts they operate in. I advocate for instance that it is impossible to separate out clientelism from tribalism, and that ethnic conflict is closely related to both of these. Due to this in order to justify and construct my argument I must separate out clientelism, tribalism and ethnic conflict and study them individually. Clientelism To determine from what circumstances Clientelism in African emanated it is important to define the term itself and what it means in African society. Clientelism is also known as patron-client relations/politics, and in its modern form is highly evident in African society. This clientelism is an exchange between actors who have unequal balance of power, one being weaker, and the other being stronger. It is the patron who is the more powerful and the client who is normally the weaker of the two. The exchange between client and patron is formed when the more powerful patron offers something, be it scarce resources or protection to the weaker client. This weaker client offers something back in return, perhaps support or other services to the patron who is in a more dominant position. † bound up with important ties of reprocity linking those who are related within networks of vertical relationships. Clientelism can be viewed on both micro and macro levels as a phenomenon of African society (although it is evident elsewhere),and to assess from where this Clientelism originated from it is necessary to see where it is present in modern society. In modern day Africa these patron -client relationships are most visible in the political arena. I argue that clientelism although it is pervasive in African politics did not emerge as a direct result of colonisation, which most people would view as the birthplace of modern African politics and political institutions as a result of the restructuring of African society. Instead I advocate that Clientelism, although present in modern day politics was in place well before the colonial era and was present in tradition and the era before any notion of modernity was in Africa. I believe clientelism was evident in the traditional African way of life. Pre-Colonial African society was in terms stateless. There was no formal state. African society was based around a system of patron-client relationships, which were the fundamental core of society. Where there was no state there was no other system, in a vast continent holding various competing tribes and peoples in order for there to be a ‘society' arbitrating, protecting and trade were all centred around these unequal deals between various networks. â€Å"The power relations of pre-colonial Africa were typically of patrons and clients. ‘Big Men' presided over intricate networks of clientage involving reciprocal but unequal relations with ‘small boys', as well as power over women and children and those held in the diverse forms and degrees of servitude of pawnship and slavery. 2 Patron-client networks as evident today I argue are based around extended family (and later as I will discuss) tribal loyalties evident from traditional African life. â€Å"African communities were pervaded by relations of domination and dependence, based on patriarchal power exercised across differences of genders and generations, lineages and clans, languages and cultures. â€Å"3 The arrival of Colonialism and modernity had utilised these already existing patron-client relationships and used them for their own ends. The colonial administrators sought chief headmen and perpetuated clientelism by supplementing their meagre salaries and earnings they gained from their official positions with monies gained from trade and other bonuses. (Berman) â€Å"Chiefs and headmen were the essential linkage between the colonial state and African societies. This relationship typically took on a patron-client form, and had several important and contradictory consequences. â€Å"4 So I argue rather than colonialism creating these patron client linkages it merely utilised them. I believe that clientelism at it is today stemmed from the traditional African societies. So to reiterate African society pre-colonial era although traditional was not so natural and traditionally uncorrupted to be devoid of the practice of clientelism that we so readily see as corruption today. That is was present and a working framework for society. â€Å"The other runs the risk, in reaction, of idealising the virtues of a pre-colonial era supposedly devoid of corruption, the growth of which is supposed to have been caused by the perversion of the social order induced by the arrival of the colonialist Europeans. â€Å"5 I argue that modernity and the formation of formal political institutions and frameworks of power merely perpetuated Clientelism and provided new avenues for the patron-client relationships based on new networks of power. What had always gone on before merely was allowed to operate in a new arena. African politics became â€Å"politics of the belly†, where individuals used public office for private gain. The scarcity of resources in Africa being as it is, if one person holds an office where he/she controls resources or power politics becomes a way of utilising patron-client networks to distribute these resources and gain support and power. made patron/client relations not only the fundamental mode of access to the state and its resources, but also, as in pre-colonial society, the fundamental relationship between ordinary people and those with wealth or power. † As before in pre-colonial society clientelism formed the basis of a persons power through the number of people he had domination and arrangements over, now in politics a persons political power is based on how many people pledge support through reciprocal client-patron networks in return for favours. Clientelism hasn't been formed it has merely morphed into a new generation of deals. â€Å"Where land was plentiful and populations small, wealth and power were measured in control of people, in having a large following of family and non-kin dependants. â€Å"7 In politics this clientelism has become diverse, not created by modernity but adapted for its use in formal political positions. Peter Ekeh (1975) described this as being the formation in African society of two publics, where Clientelism has been and always is the norm. That the same political actors act in both systems of a Civic public and the Primordial public. The citizen in the Civic public works in the beaurocratic institutions of the state, in a supposedly amoral system. The citizen takes from his position and gives nothing in return. This is through clientelism and a network of contacts where state resources and power can be distributed in this way. However the same person in his Primordial public, largely associated with ethnic tribalism and belonging to an extended family/ community, gives out and gets nothing in return. Due to the kinship of this the actor is expected to do good for his own community, by using his political position. The key idea in Ekeh's case then is that the ‘good man channels part of the largesse of the civic public to the primordial public. ‘ This shows the complex links between the old clientelism networks and what I will argue as the more modern artificial tribal relationships in African society. Tribalism Tribalism in its present form in Africa however is not a traditional aspect of African culture I argue as Clientelism had been, but a product of the development imposed on the region by Colonialism. Colonialism and the social and economic changes it brought with it ‘created' the sense of tribalism and strong ethnic identities that are present in modern Africa. That tribes were not traditionally based but created in a means to gain power, resources and recognition in the process of colonial modernising. â€Å"The accumulating weight of evidence shows that African ethnicity and its relationship to politics is new not old: a response to capitalist modernity shaped by similar forces to those related to the development of ethnic nationalism in Europe since the late nineteenth century. † This is not to say there were not tribes in the pre-colonial era, but I believe what tribes existed there were, not so ethnically divided. That the tribes were various groups of mixed race and language peoples who were in a constant state of flux, without the fixed ethnic boundaries one finds today. â€Å"Pre-colonial political and socio-cultural boundaries were marked by fuzziness and flexibility; and Africans existed within a reality of multiple, overlapping and alternative collective identities. â€Å"9 What created these tribal identities therefore if they were not present in traditional African society was the arrival of colonialism. Europeans were of the assumption that African tribes were the basis of society. That the tribes had neat compact boundaries and consisted of culturally identical peoples. This assumption I argue was the basis for tribal creation, as the missionaries especially and other state institutions sought to formalise and categorise these tribal units. The recording of culture and the teaching to a whole area of a ‘supposedly' local language, which in many cases was merely a local dialect, began to bring differing peoples together. This wiped out some cultural differences and creating false collectives of tribal peoples often not historically related, but brought together by colonial boundaries. â€Å"The ideology and culture of colonialism, especially in the imagining of African societies by colonial officials and European missionaries, provided the dominant cognitive context moulding the invention of tribes and their customs by Africans themselves. â€Å"10 If the colonial rulers and administration could claim links with these tribes then, through working with the ‘traditional' ruling groups in Africa they gained legitimacy in their operations and ruling of the area. By working with these fixed tribes, the colonial rulers could fragment and control the local populace by breaking it down into smaller loyal groups. In reality the creation of tribes made it easier for the colonial beaurocracy to rule. â€Å"Each administrative unit ideally contained a single culturally and linguistically homogenous ‘tribe' in which people continued to live within the indigenous institutions and were subject to ‘tribal discipline' through local structures of authority. â€Å"11 Although this was a key issue in the creation of Africa tribalism however, I believe that the stronger reason for the formation of tribes was for political gain and recognition. Due to this European notion of African tribalism, in order to hold power with the colonial administration actors must be part of a clearly fixed ethnic group. This created political tribalism, which was the creation of ethnicities by elite groups in African society to gain access to resources and to seek the foundations for a conservative modernisation. In short it was the manipulation of tribal ethnic identities by Africans themselves for political and economic gains in the face of colonial changes. † Ethnic collective action', according to Mozaffar, ‘is predominantly a process of strategic political interaction between self-interested actors with divergent interests'. 12 Ethnic Conflict Ethnic Conflict has both strong links with tribalism and clientelism in Africa. I believe its origin is not so easy to pinpoint as it has been for tribalism and patron-client relations but that ethnic conflict is merely a product of the two. It was evident in pre-colonial society and was heightened and exacerbated by the modern formation of tribes in the colonial era as I have previously described. Ethnic Conflict was present in traditional African society. African society had never been egalitarian in nature, and a society in which there are unequal power relations is ultimately to have conflict in its midst. † Pre-colonial societies were thus full of conflict and competition, instability and change. † What I believe was created by the form of colonial development placed on Africa was the increase in ethnic tensions as new tribes and identities were created. Resources in Africa are still scarce and the modern beaurocratic frame work and political distribution of power has led to ethnic conflict becoming more fierce and modern in its use of warfare and state apparatus. The tribal divisions between the Hutus and Tutsis and the ensuing Rwandan war and genocide are examples of this. As the colonial era ‘created' false country borders this conflict now often seeps out between neighbouring countries, comprising of different tribal identities over land and resources. I believe the colonial era did not create tribal conflict but merely change the scale that it is played out upon and provided it with state apparatus, militia, armies that now take conflict into a modern era, on a wider and more devastating scale. Conclusion It is clear to see then that tribalism, ethnic conflict and clientelism, although intricately related all have different origins. I advocate however that they were all evident in some way or form before any type of modernity was present in Africa. Although I believe Clientelism and ethnic conflict were not created by the development in the colonial era they were not solved or prevented by colonial restructuring. They still persist today. Ethic conflict I argue was present before the arrival of the Europeans in Africa on a localised scale as fighting between the complex and varied tribes on the continent. With the arrival of colonialism I believe it was merely aggravated by the adaptation of formal tribes and the struggle in politics for scarce resources, power and recognition. I argue that it has merely adapted and become a more serious problem as the apparatus of state have been used to fight wars etc. The conflict now envelops far larger groups of people and even countries constructed by the colonial boundaries of ethnicity and country. Clientelism is pervasive throughout African politics. It is our normative viewing of clientelism today, as corruption in Africa that I believe has led to some believing it was is not in existence in pre-colonial society but a product of the introduction of formal politics and modernity in Africa. of idealising the virtues of a pre-colonial era supposedly devoid of corruption, the growth of which is supposed to have been caused by the perversion of the social order induced by the arrival of colonialist Europeans. † What I believe we must consider however that we are applying the principles of the old African order rather to a new context of modern development and democratic politics, etc where impartiality is presupposed. This is what makes us view clientelism as a modern phenomenon rather than its rightful place as a traditional form of dealings in African society. This is the opposite with tribalism, where many suppose it as a traditional part of African society. It was this European view of tribalism that thought of it as such, however closer examination reveals it to be a politically dynamic and deliberately constructed phenomenon. It was not a traditional aspect of society that was carried over into colonial modernity but a means by which if African created a concrete identity they could gain power and resources in a system which colonialism brought about.

Marble Chip Investigation Essay

Fair Test To make it a fair test and make my results more accurate I will try and keep all variables constant except the concentration of the acid. This will include weighing the marble chips every time and trying to use lumps of roughly the same size to keep the surface area fairly constant as a change in surface area will affect the rate of reaction. I will try and avoid a change in temperature and I will use the same equipment throughout the tests. Each concentration will be repeated at least once to improve accuracy as an average can be taken. Research The rate of reaction depends upon two factors, the number of collisions within a time between the reactants, and the fraction of these collisions that are successful. Therefore, the higher the concentration of the reactants, the higher the rate of reaction because there will be an increased number of collisions, this is called collision theory. However, for the reaction between the two reactants to be successful, they must collide with enough energy to react, the energy needed to react is known as  activation energy. This can be shown on a graph like the one below, I believe this graph is similar to what the energy diagram would be for my investigation. This shows that my chemical reaction will be exothermic, therefore it will release more energy than it uses to react. Therefore, at a higher concentration, there will be more reactions releasing energy in the form of heat that will enable more particles to reach their activation energy level and react. This shows that the rate of reaction will increase with the concentration of acid. Prediction After having done some research I feel that I can make an education prediction concerning what will happen during my investigation. I predict that the higher the concentration of acid I use, the faster the rate of reaction will be. I think this because the higher the concentration is, the more acid particles there will be to collide with the marble chip with enough energy to cause a reaction as explained in collision theory. I also believe that the rate of reaction will increase with concentration of acid because the chemical reaction I am doing is an exothermic reaction. Therefore, it will release energy as the reactions take place, this will give more energy to other particles around it and will cause the reaction to speed up as more particles reach their activation energy and collide with enough energy to react. Preliminary test results I started with 10g of marble chip and 100cm3 of 2M acid, the reaction was too fast and could not be accurately measured. I then tried 3g of marble chip with the same amount of 2M acid (100cm3), this worked fine, however, when the 0.4M concentration was tested the reaction was too slow and could not be accurately measured due to our scale. I then tried 6g of marble chip and it gave 135 cm3 of CO2 with the 2M concentration and 5 cm3 of CO2 with the 0.4M concentration. I felt that this would give us a good range of results so I  stuck with those measurements based on my preliminary tests. Observations When we had done our experiment we realised that we could benefit from some tests with other concentrations of acid to increase accuracy. Therefore we decided to do tests with 1.8M, 1.4M, 1M, 0.6M and 0.2M acid. However, when we did these tests they produced a much higher volume of carbon  dioxide than we would expect from our previous results. I came to the conclusion that this would have to be down to a change in one of the variables. Looking at the variables it was possible that it could have been temperature or surface area of the marble chips that caused the change, but as there had not been any large change in these variables it was unlikely that they would have such a clear affect on the results. After doing a few tests I found that it was the acid that I was using that had affected the results, I had started on a new batch of acid as the previous bottle had run out. Even though both batches of acid were labelled as being 2M, it was clear that one was stronger than the other and therefore increased the rate of reaction as the chance of acid particles colliding with the marble chip had been increased as there were more acid particles. Due to this, I plotted there results as a separate line, however, the results still show the same pattern and are therefore still useful in concluding the relation between gas given off and the concentration of acid, as explained by collision theory. Conclusion As you can see on the graph, both lines go up in a smooth curve. This shows that there is a correlation between concentration of acid and the volume of gas given off. As the concentration of acid increases so does the volume of gas, therefore they are proportional. The gradient of the line gets steeper as the concentration increases, this means that there was a larger increase of gas produced between 1.6M and 2M, than there was between 0.4M and 0.8M, even though the increase in concentration of acid was 0.4M in both. The graph shows that at higher concentrations of acid, more carbon dioxide was produced but in the same amount of time. This shows that at higher concentrations, the rate of reaction must have been faster to produce more products in the same time period. This can be explained by collision theory and the ideas on activation energy that I explained in my research and prediction. In my prediction I said that more gas would be given off with a higher  concentration, these results show that I was correct. This is because due to collision theory, in a low concentration of acid the acid particles are spread far apart. This means that there is very little chance of acid particles colliding with the marble chip with enough energy to react. In a high concentration, the acid particles are closer together as there is more of them within the same volume. This means that there is a much higher chance of collision with the marble chip, and there is more energy due to the energy being produced by the reaction, which is exothermic, this causes the reaction to be faster. This can be seen in my results, the 2M acid gave an average of 134.75cm3 of carbon dioxide, where the 0.4M concentration only gave an average of 4cm3 of carbon dioxide. The rate of reaction is reduced by a decrease of particles within the same space. Evaluation Accuracy of results I feel that my experiment was accurate because the results made a smooth curve on my graph. I did have a problem with the 1.8M, 1.4M, 1M, 0.6M and 0.2M acid results, as the acid appeared to be stronger than it was labelled. However, I resolved this problem by plotting the results as a separate line on my graph and they still showed a very similar curve to the other one showing the same relation between concentration of acid and the volume of gas given off. This shows that it was probably just the concentration of the acid that caused the problem and not my execution of the experiment that caused the results to be slightly different than what was expected. I think that my results could have been better as there was some variation between my four results for each of 2M, 1.6M, 1.2M, 0.8M, and 0.4M. However I do not feel this problem is major as the variations were relatively small as is shown by the error margins drawn on my graph, but there is still room for improvement. Possible Improvements If I was to do this investigation again I would try and keep some of the variables constant that I had less control over. The investigation was carried out over a few days so the classroom temperature may have varied. This could have had a slight effect on the rate of reaction making my results less accurate. Although the marble chips were roughly the same size they weren’t all exactly the same shape. If I could find a way to make the marble chips all the same shape and size then the investigation would be fairer as the surface area of the marble chips would be constant. If I was to do this investigation again I would try and use only one batch of acid for the whole experiment because as I found out, the acid supplied isn’t always exactly the strength that it says it is. I would also try to use a more accurate piece of equipment to measure the volume of gas produced, using a measuring cylinder did not provide the best accuracy that was open to me. I could have achieved a higher level of accuracy with a buret.

Islam - Essay Example Being the youngest of world’s great few religions, Islam has gained huge significance and is followed by a very large population. People from very diverse backgrounds follow Islam. The day of Hajj when all these people irrespective of their identity, caste, creed, color, race, nationality, sect and ethnicity unite to recite Kalima, offer prayers and stand in one row shoulder to shoulder with each other. It is generally thought that Islam begins with the birth of Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H), which is not the case. Islam existed way before the birth of Holy soul. The Holy Quran testifies this fact with the following verse Anyone who opposes Gabriel should know that he has brought down this (the Quran) into your heart, in accordance with Gods will, confirming previous scriptures, and providing guidance and good news for the believers (Surah 2:97).(Origin of Islam—Quranic Revelation, 2002). There is not a distinct difference between the spiritual and luxurious factors of lifesty le in Islam; all factors of a Muslims lifestyle are to be focused to providing Allah. Islam extended almost instantly beyond its homeland in the Arabian Peninsula, and now has considerable impact in African-American, throughout Japan, European countries, and America. Southern and northern chinese business negotiations Essay

Southern and northern chinese business negotiations - Essay Example The compulsions of the present times require versatility in the work ideology and functioning, thus making it imperative that individuals and firms, embrace the multi-cultural to meet the challenges with efficiency and unmatched proficiency. Emerging markets are crucial in the era of globalization and can be defined as the new area with high income and where the demand for the product can be created with relative success. Cases of developing economies like China and India are prime examples that have huge potential for developing markets. China, with its fast developing economy, is a strong emerging market that has tremendous scope for the multinational companies. We would therefore be looking at the factors that have significant impact on the business negotiations and analyzing those factors for their role and impact on the company’s marketing policies and strategies in such market conditions because market strategies need to be tailored according to the environmental conditions of the place. China is the fastest developing economy that has captured a large market segment of the world market in the last decade and a half. The country also boasts of a highly cultural society that takes pride in its more than thousand years old culture and firmly believes in conducting its business within the broader framework of its cultural values and business ethics. The vast differences in the socio cultural values of the eastern countries and the western countries have complicated the business negotiation techniques which need to be further explored for better understanding of cross cultural values and business ethics. The purpose of the study is to examine the factors that influence the business negotiations of China with the international business community at large and the West in particular. In the fast changing global equation of socio economic development, it is

Write a briefing for an American Business Traveler going to Japan Research Paper

Write a briefing for an American Business Traveler going to Japan (Intercultural Communications Class) - Research Paper Example Stepping into Japan from a Western country like the United States, can be like stepping into an alien world, because so many of these unnoticed assumptions, that have become second nature, now appear out of place. Communication problems arise when signals are misinterpreted, and very often this is a disorienting experience. This briefing paper outlines a few of the main differences that a traveller from the United States can expect to find in communication with Japanese nationals in Japan. It explains how Japanese customs and habits have arisen, and explains what effects they have on the business context today. Finally some final points are suggested to guide a visitor to Japan in the first phase of encounter with this fascinating culture. Japan has a population of about 127 million people and the main religions are Shinto and various branches of Buddhism. Both Roman Catholic and Protestant Christianity are also represented, but on a much smaller scale (Japan Introduction, no date). Shinto is an ancient religion that involves respect for ancestors and various spirit beings called kami. These can be divinities with personalities, like people, or they can be attached to natural phenomena. Mount Fuji, for example, is revered as holy place, and the Japanese have a strong attachment to the natural world. Festivals for the different seasons reflect ancient religious beliefs also, such as the New Year festival and the famous cherry blossom festival. Evidence of the practice of Shinto can be seen in temples which are dotted around the countryside, and occasionally in cities too, and also in Japanese homes, where there is often one corner of the house which is used as a small shrine where prayers can be said and offerings can be made. This reverence for the ancestors extends also to relations with older people in society, since Japanese generally respect older people, at home and at work, and defer to their authority more than would be usual in American society. Financial Markets Assignment Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Financial Markets Assignment - Essay Example sk and return of different types of investments, it should be noted that past returns are no guarantee of future performance, especially with respect to expected returns, even over time intervals as long as several decades. However, past returns over very long time horizons can be informative. For instance, a 1987 study by Jones and Wilson indicated that $1 invested in 1870 Would have grown over the next century (by 1985) to $13,264 if invested in U.S. stocks, $340 if invested in U.S. long-term bonds, and $260 if invested in U.S. short-term money market debt (in the meantime, consumer prices had risen so that it took $8.40 to buy what $1.00 bought in 1870). Although equity returns have greatly exceeded debt returns over the entire time interval, bond returns matched those of stocks over time intervals as long as 60 years (e.g., 1872 to 1932). In another study (by Siegel in 1992), it was found that bond returns exceeded those of stock returns over another 50+ year period, from 1802 to 1861, although a dollar invested into stocks in 1802 would have grown in value to $955,000 by 1990 compared to only $5770 for long-term bonds, $2680 for short-term bonds, and $15.80 for gold (it should be mentioned that it took $11.10 in 1990 to buy what $1.00 bought in 1802). Thus, although stocks tend to average higher returns than bonds over the very long term, there is substantial risk of stocks underperforming bonds even over fairly long time horizons. On the other hand, commodity investments like gold tend to be very poor investments over long time horizons (even though they do tend to keep up with inflation) Although the return to real estate was not measured in these studies, most believe that average real estate returns have been close to that for stocks. However, many analysts...The value of any asset is a function of the cash flows expected from the asset. These cash flows can be valued by discounting them at an appropriate interest rate. The appropriate discount rate is the minimum expected return that is required on assets with similar risk (and with other relevant characteristics). Discounting the expected cash flows by the required returns yields a value, which if paid as the price for the asset, would result in an internal rate of return (IRR) equal to the minimum required return. Victor A. Canto and Arthur B. Laffer Theory and common experience postulate that general economic factors impact stock prices in the aggregate. These same factors can have substantially different effects, depending on the size, location, and the industry groups being considered.Over the past decade, research at A. B. Laffer, V. A. Canto & Associates has focused on developing a portfolio strategy that would identify differential performance based on overall economic environment, location, and size.

Feminism - A Personal Perspective Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Feminism - A Personal Perspective - Essay Example Women often cannot and many a time are not allowed to transcend this idea that brings in its wake a burden of expectations and constraints. There exist definite and stereotypical ideas about what womanhood means and feminism is the field of study that intends to shatter such obnoxious and repressive ideas. Though women’s study intends to place women at the center of all intellectual inquiries, the thing to be kept in mind is that the fact that feminism defies all stereotypical notions transcends all gender specifications. The fact that feminism intends to liberate women from the shackles of all preconceived notions also assumes the relevance of same rights and prerogatives for men. Feminism intends to revolt against all forms of repression of women and the rights it intends to seek are or should be universal, transcending all gender specifications. Feminists should remember that this ideal is not a philosophical pie in the sky but is, in fact, imperative for the relevance and sustenance of all forms of feminist struggles. â€Å"The true form of revolutionary change is never merely the repressive situations that we seek to escape, but the piece of the oppressor that is planted deep within each of us.† It is imperative for the adherents of feminism to not to fall into the male trap of hating men. The very fact of doing so not only justifies and establishes the stereotypical notions of masculinity in our society but at the same time authenticates the stereotypical notions about women.

Isolation of Essential Oils from Eugenol Essay Example for Free

Isolation of Essential Oils from Eugenol Essay Anyone who has walked through a forest or who enjoys the variety of fragrances that flowers have to offer knows that many plants and trees have their own distinctively pleasant odors. These odors are due to the volatile essential oils, many of which have been prized commodities since ancient times. If a list of commercially important essential oils was compiled the list would exceed 200 essential oils. Thyme, garlic, peppermint, and spearmint are but a few examples of the many essential oils used in commercial goods. Essential oils have many applications in the world that can range from flavor enhancement to perfumes. Some oils have also been found to have medicinal properties such as antibacterial and antifungal abilities. Chaulmoogra oil is one of the few know curative agents for leprosy. The oils can also be used in the paint industry, where turpentine is used as a solvent for many paint products. These oils are often found in the intracellular spaces and glands of plant tissue. The oils may be located throughout the entire plant, but are often concentrated in the seeds or flowers of the plant. Many of the essential oils are steam-volatile and can undergo steam distillation to isolate the oils. Another method of oil extraction from these plants is through both solvent extraction and pressing methods. The functional group that is mostly responsible for the characteristic odors and flavors of fruit and flowers is the ester. Although the ester composes most of the scents it is not totally responsible for all scents. Beside the ester functional group an essential oil can also possess complex mixtures of hydrocarbons, alcohols, and carbonyl groups. These compounds usually belong to one of two groups of natural products called terpenes or phenylpropanoids. Investigation of the essential oils in the nineteenth century found that many of the pleasant odors we obtain from nature contained exactly 10 carbon atoms in the compound. These 10-carbon compounds later became known as terpenes if they were hydrocarbons. If the compound contained oxygen in an alcohol, ketone, or aldehyde functional group it was called a terpenoid. It was eventually found that minor and less volatile compounds containing 15, 20, 30, and 40 carbon atoms also exist that give an odor. Since the 10-carbon compounds were at the time called terpenes they changed the name to monoterpenes. The other terpenes were classified in the following way. Class

RP-HPLC Method for Estimation of Ferrous Ascorbate

RP-HPLC Method for Estimation of Ferrous Ascorbate Development and validation of RP-HPLC method for estimation of ferrous ascorbate and folic acid in bulk and in pharmaceutical formulation ABSTRACT A simple, sensitive, precise and reproducible RP-HPLC method has been developed and validated for estimating the contents of ferrous ascorbate and folic acid combination in bulk and pharmaceutical formulation. The analysis was performed with Gemini-NX-C18 (250Ãâ€"4.60 mm, 5 µm) column using mobile phase phosphate buffer (pH 7): methanol (98:2, v/v) for ferrous ascorbate whereas phosphate buffer: methanol (88:12, v/v) for folic acid. Mobile phase was delivered at flow rate of 1.0 ml/min for ferrous ascorbate and folic acid. The detection wavelength was 264 nm for ferrous ascorbate and 280 nm for folic acid. The retention time of ferrous ascorbate and folic acid was found to be 2.7 and 6.8 min, respectively. The linearity was obeyed in the concentration range of 10-50  µg/mL for ferrous ascorbate (r2 = 0.999) and 10-50  µg/mL for folic acid (r2= 0.999). Tablet content of ferrous ascorbate and folic acid was found 100.44 % and 98.69 %, respectively. INTRODUCTION Iron deficiency and sickle cell is the most common cause of anemia worldwide, accounting for about half of all anemia cases. Prevalence of anemia in India is high because of low dietary intake, poor availability of iron and chronic blood loss due to hookworm infestation and malaria. An exogenous source of folic acid is necessary for the maintenance of normal erythropoiesis. Study was carried out to assess efficacy, safety and tolerability of combination of ferrous ascorbate and folic acid (Phosfomin-XT) in patients with iron deficiency anemia, the report sho wn the increase in bioavailability of ferrous in presence of ascorbate salt. ferrous ascorbate (Fig. 1.A) is newly introduced salt of ferrous having more bioavailability than other salts of ferrous ascorbate [1]. But till date no more literature available for estimation of ferrous ascorbate. The use of therapeutic multivitamins are indicated in cases of deficiency in pathological conditions in which the nutritional requirements a re greatly increased or in conditions in which absorption, utilization, or excretion of vitamins are abnormal [2]. Folic acid (Fig. 1.B) deficiency is the result of megaloblastic anemia [3]. Ion pair chromatographic method was reported for simultaneous determination of seven water soluble vitamins nicotinamide, thiamine, riboflavin, pyridoxine, pyridoxal, pyridoxamine, cyanocobalamine and folic acid [2]. HPLC method was developed for estimation of folic acid [2-4]. RP-HPLC method for estimation of folic acid was also reported in Indian pharmacopoeia (2010) [5]. But till date, no report is available for estimation of ferrous ascorbate in combination with folic acid in bulk and pharmaceutical formulation. An attempt has made to develop and validate a new, rapid and sensitive method for estimating the content of ferrous ascorbate and folic acid. Experimental Conditions Instrumentation The HPLC chromatographic system Agilent Technologies 1200 series, assembled with a G1315D quaternary pump, a G1315D diode array detector, a rheodyne injector fitted with a 20 ÃŽ ¼L loop and EZ Chrome Elite software. Reagents and chemicals Ferrous ascorbate and folic acid were obtained as a gift samples from Curex Pharmaceutical Pvt. Ltd., Jalgaon (MS) and S. kant Healthcare Ltd, Wapi (gujrat). HPLC grade acetonitrile, and methanol was purchased from Rankem Ltd., India. Double distilled water was generated in house. IPHARED tablets (ferrous ascorbate equivalent to elemental iron and folic acid in ratio of 100:1.5 mg) were purchased from a local market. Standard stock solution of ferrous ascorbate (100  µg/mL) An accurately weighed quantity of about 10 mg ferrous ascorbate was dissolved in 100.0 mL of phosphate buffer (pH 7). Working standard solution of ferrous ascorbate Working standard solution of ferrous ascorbate in the concentration range of 10–50 ÃŽ ¼g/mL was prepared by diluting an aliquot portion of about 1– 5 mL ferrous ascorbate stock solution (100 ÃŽ ¼g/mL) to 10 mL with mobile phase. Standard stock solution of folic acid (100  µg/mL) An accurately weighed quantity of about 10 mg folic acid was mixed with 0.5 mL 2.86% solution of sodium carbonate and diluted it upto 100 ml with mobile phase [5]. Working standard solution of folic acid Similarly working standard solution of folic acid in the concentration range of 10–50 ÃŽ ¼g/mL was prepared by diluting an aliquot portion of about 1–5 mL folic acid stock solution (100 ÃŽ ¼g/mL) to 10 mL with mobile phase. Sample preparation for Tablet analysis An accurately weight 20 tablets were crushed to obtained fine powder. Sample preparation of ferrous ascorbate A quantity of tablet powder equivalent to 10 mg of ferrous ascorbate (11.31 mg) was dissolved in 100 mL phosphate buffer pH 7, sonicated for 30 minutes. The solution was filtered. The aliquot portion of filtrate (2.0 mL) was diluted to 10.0 mL with mobile phase. Sample preparation of folic acid A quantity of tablet powder equivalent to 5 mg of folic acid (2.72 g) was mixed with 0.5 mL of 2.86% of sodium carbonate solution and then dissolved in 100 mL mobile phase. The mixture was sonicated for 30 minutes. The solution was filtered. An aliquot portion of filtrate (4.0 mL) was further diluted to 10.0 mL with mobile phase. Chromatographic condition ferrous ascorbate and folic acid Chromatographic condition ferrous ascorbate The optimized chromatographic conditions for ferrous ascorbate estimation were Gemini-NX- C18 (250Ãâ€" 4.60, 5 µm) as a stationary phase, mixed phosphate buffer (pH 7): methanol (98:2, v/v) as mobile phase, flow rate 1 mL/min with detection wavelength 264 nm. The chromatogram for ferrous ascorbate is as shown in (Fig. 2). The optimized chromatographic conditions for folic acid estimation were Gemini-NX- C18 (250Ãâ€" 4.60, 5 µm) as a stationary phase, phosphate buffer: methanol (88:12, v/v) as mobile phase, flow rate 1 mL/min with detection wavelength 280 nm. The chromatogram for ferrous ascorbate is as shown in (Fig. 3). Results and discussion Ferrous ascorbate and folic acid combination was used in management of anemia [6]. In literature various HPLC methods for estimation of folic acid was reported [7-9]. But no method was reported for the estimation of ferrous ascorbate and simultaneous estimation of ferrous ascorbate and folic acid combination. A numbers of trials were carried out for simultaneous estimation of ferrous ascorbate and folic acid. Initially, therefore attempt was done for simultaneous estimation of both drugs by reversed-phase, HPLC separation was tried using phosphate buffer pH 3 and methanol (98:2) as the mobile phase, in which ferrous ascorbate eluted at 2.4 min which is nearer to dead time of column and folic acid was not eluted, the resolution and numbers of theroetical plates was also poor. The organic content of mobile phase was also investigated in different ratio to optimize the separation of ferrous ascorbate and folic acid simultaneously. But no mobile phase was found suitable for analysis. The refore, attempt was made to estimate ferrous ascorbate and folic acid in bulk and in pharmaceutical formulation separately using different chromatographic condition which was optimized separately for ferrous ascorbate and folic acid (Table I). Therefore attempt was made to estimate ferrous ascorbate and folic acid by using two different mobile phases and sample preparation method. The mobile phase phosphate buffer pH 7- Methanol (98:2) was selected for ferrous ascorbate estimation. The buffer-methanol (88:12, v/v) was selected for folic acid estimation as per Indian pharmacopoeia [5]. The constant flow rate 1mL/min was maintained for both analysis. Detection wavelength 264 nm for ferrous ascorbate and 280 nm were selected for folic acid. Retention time was found to be 2.7 min for ferrous ascorbate and 6.8 min for and folic acid. VALIDATION PARAMETERS [10, 11]. System suitability System suitability parameters, such as number of theoretical plates, HETP, and peak tailing, were determined. The results obtained are shown in Table I the number of theoretical plates for ferrous ascorbate and folic acid was found 3219 and 2535 respectively with separate mobile phase. Linearity and range Ferrous ascorbate and folic acid follows a linearity of response between 10–50  µg/mL. Linearity study was performed separately by analyzing five different concentrations of ferrous ascorbate and folic acid. The Solution were diluted appropriately with mobile phase to obtain concentrations in the range of 10-50 ÃŽ ¼g/ml. All measurements were repeated three times for each concentration. Y = 23397x + 28729 is the equation for ferrous ascorbate with R2 value 0.999 Y = 188287x +150052 is the equation for folic acid with R2 value 0.999 Precision The repeatability was studied by multiple injections of a homogenous sample of 20  µg/mL of ferrous ascorbate and folic acid separately. The results of repeatability study of ferrous ascorbate and folic acid are as follows. The result of intra-day precision study, % RSD for ferrous ascorbate was found 1.31 and for folic acid was found to be 1.61. The result of Inter-day precision study, the % RSD for ferrous ascorbate was found 1.60 and for folic acid was found to be 1.54 respectively. The results of the precision study indicate that the method is reliable and reproducible, with a relative standard deviation less than 2.0%. Accuracy Recovery study was performed to validate the accuracy of the developed method. Recovery study was performed at 80%, 100% and 120 % level. The known amount of standard ferrous ascorbate was added to preanalyzed sample and subjected for HPLC analysis. Procedure for ferrous ascorbate Sample solution A quantity of tablet powder equivalent to 10 mg ferrous ascorbate (11.35 mg) was dissolved in 100 mL phosphate buffer, sonicated for 30 minutes. The solution was filtered. Standard stock solution of ferrous ascorbate (100  µg/mL) An accurately weighed quantity of about 10 mg ferrous ascorbate was dissolved in 100.0 mL of phosphate buffer pH 7. Working solution of ferrous ascorbate Three sets containing 10.0 ml volumetric flask were taken. To each set, 2 ml of sample solution was added. To the first set (80%) of three volumetric flasks, a quantity of about 1.6 mL of standard stock solution of ferrous ascorbate was added. To the second set (100%) of three volumetric flasks, a quantity of about 2.0 mL of standard stock solution ferrous ascorbate was added. To the third set (120%) of three volumetric flasks, a quantity of about 2.4 mL of standard stock solution of ferrous ascorbate was added. The volume was made up to the mark with mobile phase in all flasks. The sample and standard solution were analyzed as per optimized chromatographic conditions for ferrous ascorbate. Procedure for folic acid Sample solution of folic acid A quantity of tablet powder equivalent to 10 mg folic acid (5360 mg) was dissolved in 1mL of 2.86% of solution of ferrous sodium carbonate and volume was made with 100 mL buffer, sonicated for 30 minutes. The solution was filtered through whatman filter paper No.41. Standard stock solution of folic acid (100  µg/mL) Weighed accurately about 10 mg folic acid mixed with 0.5 ml 2.86% solution of sodium carbonate solution and diluted with 100 ml of mobile phase. Working solution Three sets containing 10.0 ml volumetric flask were taken. To each set, 2 ml of sample solution was added. To the first set (80%) of three volumetric flasks, a quantity of about 1.6 mL of standard stock solution of folic acid was added. To the second set (100 %) of three volumetric flasks, a quantity of about 2.0 mL of standard stock solution folic acid was added. To the third set (120 %) of three volumetric flasks, a quantity of about 2.4 mL of standard stock solution of folic acid was added. Then, the volume was made up to the mark with mobile phase in all flasks. The sample and standard solution were analyzed as per optimized chromatographic conditions given for folic acid. These results of accuracy are as summarized in Table no: II Determination of the limit of detection and quantitation (LOD and LOQ) The limit of detection and limit of quantitation is determined by using following formulae and result is given below. , Where SD = Standard deviation of response, S = Slope of linearity curve equation The result of LOD (ÃŽ ¼g/ml) of ferrous ascorbate and folic acid was found to be 0.259 and 0.213 respectively. The result of LOQ (ÃŽ ¼g/ml) of ferrous ascorbate and folic acid was found to be 0.784 and 0.645 respectively. Robustness As per ICH norms, small but deliberate variations, by altering the flow rate of the mobile phase, were made to check the method’s capacity to remain unaffected (method stability). The change was made in flow rate by altering flow rate 0.9 mL /min and 1.1 mL/min Results of analysis are summarized in Table no: III Tablet analysis Contents of ferrous ascorbate and folic acid found in the tablets by the proposed method are shown in Table VI the low RSD values indicate that the method is precise and accurate. Specificity study Specificity study was conducted for ferrous ascorbate and folic acid in presence of excipients present in tablet. Preparation of physical mixture for specificity study The average weight of 20 tablets was found to be 804 mg. Therefore, as per labelled claim, tablet formulation excipients in tablet were 75 mg. Mixture of drug and excipients {728  µg/mL ferrous ascorbate, 1.5  µg/mL folic acid and 75  µg/mL excipients in equal parts (like lactose monohydrate, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, starch pregelatinised etc.)} was prepared. The solution was analyzed by optimized chromatographic conditions given for ferrous ascorbate and folic acid. The peak purity value of ferrous ascorbate and folic acid was found to be more than the input threshold value. It shows that the peak of ferrous ascorbate and folic acid was free from any impurity or co-elution in presence excipients present in tablet. The VU-spectrum of ferrous ascorbate and folic acid is as shown in Fig. 4 and Fig. 5 Also the peak purity spectrum of ferrous ascorbate and folic acid was shown in Fig. 6 and Fig. 7 Conclusion RP-HPLC method for estimation ferrous ascorbate and folic acid in bulk and in pharmaceutical formulation was successfully developed as per ICH guidelines. The method was found accurate, precise and sensetive hence it can be used for routine analysis by any analyst.

In present: Canon U.S.A Company merged with North America Canon Business Solution to from one of the largest imaging business to business sales organization in the world. This merged company named as Canon Solutions America, Inc. History of Logo The logo canon holds such meanings. It effectively shows Canons corporate spirit, this aims to set a global standard for advanced technologies and service while becoming a top in the industry to which will direct ones hopes or ambitions towards achieving something. The Canons logo, introduced in 1935. Although it changed allover to present logo as company grows. Without being affected these modifications, the strong character without absorbing it in the sweeping inward stroke of the C has remained intact from the day that the company was founded. Make great efforts to achieve for consistent behavior in communication since day one has greatly contributed to the worldwide. The present canon logo contains a vivid red color, although it has undergone for a number of changes before it reaching the present logo. In 1933, when precision optical instruments laboratory was established, they use the name Kwanon to cameras manufactured on the trails basis at this time. This title reflected the quality of being well meaning of Kwanon, the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy, and include the companys vision of creating marvelous magnificent cameras in the world. The logo also represent the image of the Goddess kwanon with 1000 arms and flames. When the company attempt to find to begin full-scale marketing, it needed a fantastic brand name that all the people will accept in the world. So, for this an attitude to a particular issue, in 1935 the name Canon was registered as the official trademark. This word Canon has a number meanings such as scriptures, criterion and standard. The trademark therefore showing the qualities that deserve the specified action of a company involved with fact of being exact and accurate equipment, where accuracy is fundamentally important. It is also be an expression of the companys desire to meet world-class principal and industry standards. Although these both words Canon and Kwanon had the same pronunciations, the transition went smoothly. A designer specializing in advertising created the original Canon logo in 1935. The C was exclusive in that its top end curved inward, ending in a sharp point. This style of particular design of type did not then exist in Europe or North America. The Canon name and logo were designed to show the companys global prospect, which it adopted right from beginning to the present. In 1947, Precision Optical Instruments Laboratory underwent quite a few name changes before the adoption of Canon camera Co, Inc. This change was important in that Canon brand and company names were unified for the first time in its history. Several versions of logo were also used, until a unified version was created in 1953. After further clarification, the logo of present was perfected in 1955, it has remained unchanged for nearly half a century. Self Taught Guitarist :: Music Musician Instruments Essays

Self Taught Guitarist I believe that every person has the ability to learn how to play an instrument. With enough practice, dedication and the right information, which is easy to asses via the web, you can accomplish almost anything. There are many web sites dedicated to all guitar playing levels. It is just a matter of finding the right one (or ones) for your needs and areas of improvement. Out of most web sites that I researched, there are two that I choose to talk about. These are Guitartricks.com and Cyberfret.com. Both of these websites have very good and extensive information that could keep any guitarist of any level entertained for weeks. One of the websites is also very interactive, meaning that you can post your own music on the web site for others to see and play. The topics range from beginner’s lessons to scales and even reading music! Both websites use tablature to show their audience different compositions, practice exercises and other user postings. Tablature is a series of six lines which represent the six strings on the guitar. Each line has a specific note which are E, A, D, G, B, and E from the bottom up. Then, numbers are placed on the lines to represent when and where your fingers have to be on the frets. The numbers represent the frets (frets are like keys on a piano) on the guitar and range from one all the way to twenty-two or twenty-four, depending on the guitar that you use (some guitars have twenty two frets and some have twenty-four). A very good aspect of Cyberfret.com is that it uses the treble clef as well in many of its lessons. The treble clef is a more professional and sophisticated way to write music. It is how Beethoven and J.S. Bach kept their countless inventions and masterpieces alive over so many years. Nevertheless, both of the websites focus on tablature in their beginnerâ€⠄¢s section, as well as tuning and naming all the parts of the guitar. Their content for a beginning audience is excellent and would facilitate anyone’s first understandings of the mechanics of the guitar. Since every person has their own style of music, the first thing I took into consideration when evaluating Guitartricks.com and Cyberfret.com was their assortment of styles to research.

Protection from Punishment Essay -- Government, Separation of Powers,

During the early stages of the creation of a government, it is common to witness a heavy debate over ways to both restrict the power of the government from becoming a tyranny and protect the rights of individual citizens. Founders often realize that individual citizens, if not protected somehow, would be powerless to prevent against such a government if it became corrupt. Therefore, in the creation of the American and British governments, those worried about these possibilities suggested separations of power and individual rights to be included in the documents that form the government. This debate was extremely controversial in the formation of the American government, and created a rift that, if not resolved, could have torn apart the country. Understanding this possibility, the Federalists of America agreed to hear out the proposals of the Anti-Federalists during the ratification debates of 1789 through 1791. This Bill of Rights emphasized individual rights that would protect powe rless citizens from possible tyranny of the federal government, both physical and abstract. One of the amendments proposed by James Madison, and subsequently ratified, was that â€Å"Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.† This amendment was eventually grouped into the ten amendments of the Bill of Rights, and is now known simply as the Eighth Amendment. Though this seems to be a rather straightforward law, below the surface one can see the history of struggle it was derived from, the fight that ensued over its incorporation, and how even the terms it uses have greatly affected its interpretation since December 15, 1791. As America was created almost as a child of the British Empire,... ...† (Levy 238). This is very symbolic of the American nature of law in general, as the American ideal is to create a country of responsible citizens, not just to lock them away. The Eighth Amendment’s history, through the tortures of scores of people to the debates over its inception, is filled with examples that define the history of American government. Though not the most discussed amendment during the revolutionary stage, the Eighth Amendment is quite possibly the most controversial article of the Bill of Rights in today’s society, as the question of punishment, specifically the death penalty, is constantly under debate. It is fascinating to study how, even at a time of such confusion and chaos, founders such as Madison and Henry were able to create an amendment that would retain the rights of citizens in a constantly progressing society for centuries to come.

Leadership Style Essay

Manama Logistics Company (MLC) has hired you to supervise the company’s move from downtown Manama to Isa Town. It is expected that there will be some discontentment amongst staff (as listed in the case study) It is important that you understand the different types of leadership styles, and decide what would be the best styles for you to use in the situations outlined in the case study. It is important to remember that different styles are necessary for different situations. Leadership issues are often influenced by behaviour patterns. People (supervisors and workers) generally display behaviours that are aggressive, passive or assertive. Research these three behaviours so you understand the traits of each and can describe how they relate to supervision and leadership issues. In your report to the Board describe the leadership styles you have chosen and give justification for them. You will need to identify more than one style, and give examples of when each is appropriate to use. There are four main leadership styles, and several other recognised styles. Check with your tutor if you are not sure if you have identified the main styles. You need to identify these four main styles and one other relevant leadership method, so you have a deeper understanding of leadership behaviours in various situations, and identify what is effective and what is not and why. Use APA referencing and in-text referencing throughout your Progress Report. For your first Progress Report: 1. PART A – as a group Describe the following behaviours: a. Aggressive b. Passive c. Assertive Give examples of how people display these behaviours – include words, attitudes and non verbal body language. Other group members need to submit their individual contribution via Moodle, using Turnitin by 23:59 hours on Saturday 21 September. You will need to use your own words in your report to ensure you do not exceed the permitted 30% of copied material. Please note: if you don’t reference your resources, you will get a 0% for your progress report. PART C – Individual Forum Posting Each student is required to submit a forum posting once per module. The timing, completion and quality of these postings will contribute to 15% of your individual assessment. Posting 1 due to be completed by Thursday 12 September before 2.00pm.(17 marks) Write around 300 – 400 words covering: * which behaviour you think is the best communication style to use if you were the supervisor for Manama Logistics Company. Analysis of Adarsh Society Scam Essay

Chavan was the revenue minister between 2001-2003 and had dealt with files pertaining to the ownership of the land. He is alleged to have recommended 40 per cent allotment of flats to civilians in the society, which was meant for war widows and heroes of Kargil war. The exposure of the scam forced the Congress party to seek the resignation of then Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan . Maharashtra environment department had denied giving clearance to the society. The reports make it clear that neither MCZMA nor the state’s department of environment gave any clearance for the high-rise building, The state environment department has denied giving clearance to Adarsh housing society. The state environment department has denied giving clearance to Adarsh housing society. Adarsh Co-operative Housing Society building violated provisions of the Coastal Regulation Zone Notification, 1991. No CRZ clearance or permission had been sought to construct the building. It concluded that th e no CRZ clearance had been sought for incorporating 2269 sqm of BEST land. This was a condition imposed on the housing society by the state’s department of revenue when additional land was allotted in August 2005. The Adarsh Society has also violated the floor space index permissible in the CRZ-II area of Mumbai. This is prescribed in the Development and Control Regulations of 1967. There are reports that there are other buildings too that have come up,† he accepted, adding that he will go after them after 2010 amendment to the CRZ regulations are passed by Parliament. The high-rise is built on 6,450 sq metres within the Colaba naval area and was cleared on the condition of housing war veterans but now has 104 members, including former service chiefs, senior serving Army officials, a former Environment Minister, legislators and state bureaucrats. Govt. is waiting for the official report from the various ministry, only then they take action against the gulty. MMRDA to revoke occupancy certificate till Ministry of Environment and Forest gives clearance. The prime piece of land in upmarket Colaba given to the Adarsh Cooperative Housing Society belonged to the state government and not the Services, he said. The land belongs to the state government, based on the collector’s records. Revenue department granted land to the Society as per GR of 9. 7. 1999,† he said. Certain files were missing from the adarsh community housing society that bearing signatures of important officials, pertain to the decisions taken in the stages before the project was cleared by the government. Tiwari was urban development secretary for over eight years (2000 to 2009). During his tenure, the Adarsh society was given various clearances, including additional floor space index. Raj Bhavan sources confirmed on Tuesday evening that governor K Shankarnarayan received a formal request from the state government recommending him to make reference to the Supreme Court for removal of Tiwari. This will mean that Tiwari will not be able to challenge his removal in any court. Both Defence Minister AK Antony and Army Chief General VK Singh have promised strict action against any serving officer who is found to be guilty in the scam. MoD has also said that it will give prompt permission to CBI to question any serving officer and will have no objection if they are prosecuted. The controversial Adarsh Cooperative Housing Society (ACHS) had plans to undertake another residential project. It had even approached the Maharashtra government for allotment of a 7,500 sq m plot situated near the Spastic Society of India in Colaba   ACHS had proposed to develop the plot to build cheap houses for the ‘‘ weaker sections , defence personnel and other deserving classes’’ . Society was promoted by a few IAS officers; subsequently IPS officers, government servants, MLAs and MLCs joined in and the list went up to 130 members. The society applied for land at Wadala , and the government in principle showed willingness to allot 13,000 sq metres (over 3 acres) in September 2009. This plot was located close to the high tide line, where no construction activity is usually permissible. Arguing that there were at least two other buildings which had previously been permitted to be set up right next to the HTL, Adarsh promoters requested processing of their proposal and even urged the state government to modify the HTL to override CRZ concerns. he society requested the state government to redraw the high tide line (HTL) to clear the project from the ‘‘ CRZ point of view’’ . HTL is the line of intersection of the land with the water surface at the time of high tide. Restrictions are imposed on development activity within 500m of the HTL. Minimal construction activity is permitted in these parts. But since the Adarsh scam was unearthed, the names added to the file will be deleted or the allo tment of land to Indus may be delayed,’’ said sources. All of them got flats in the society in an expensive part of Mumbai at throwaway prices. While ownership of the land was still with the state, it was in the custody of Army for several years. Army had taken custody of the land ever since it was reclaimed because the state government was to give it to the Army in return for Army’s land in Santa Cruz firing range which was taken over by for expanding the Western Expressway. Now, as the auditors go through records, it is clear that the Army neither got the land, nor financial compensation from the state. The society was asked to change the bye-laws by the then Revenue Minister Ashok Chavan. That is on record. He called a meeting and called members of the society and asked them to change the bye-laws and 40 per cent of civilians should be allowed to be members of the society. There it created a lot of problems,† Deshmukh said. the defence ministry has asked to look into issues concerning the issue of a no objection certificate, relinquishment of the land in possession of the army and the extent to which commitments for the welfare of defence ersonnel were complied with, the official added. Among other things, the bureaucrats have been asked about the circumstances under which they became members of Adarsh Cooperative Housing Society and the source of funds for the luxurious flats in the 31-storeyed building, the official said. the authorities cancelled the building’s occupation certificate and snapped off its water and power supplies. Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (B MC) has decided to provide all necessary information regarding residential buildings and societies on its website. People can ascertain whether a particular shop or nursing home is licensed or not. RC THAKUR   chief promoter of Adarsh Society, was the military estate officer in Colaba division when he came to know about the prime plot and started getting files moved. His colleagues say that whenever Thakur came up against a hurdle, he would make the person a member of the society. What I think is to demolish that building because it is not following any norms passed by the government. Or we can hand over that building to the navy and army and let them decide what to do. Or we can give the flats to the kargil widows, because that land is for them only. Rest is depend on the government. If any such scams occur in mere future than public must raise their voice in order to protest them, it somehow effect our economy and spoil our society. Mostly the scams are done by the government personnel’s. and nowadays many people are trying to somehow get the government job. If we are not raising our voice now then in future we cant save our country. In India there are so many terriost who are spoiling our country and we are not bothered about them we just focus on the terriosm.

Business Environment Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Business Environment - Essay Example Others macroeconomic factors like production, inflation, employment, investment, domestic income, international business relationships etc are discussed in Macro Economics (Childs, D, and Deitrich, S. 2003). P4: Economics can be described as social science. It is a study of how individuals, households, firms, consumers, nations maximizes there profit with limited resources and availabilities. In economics way we can term it as generating characteristics or optimizing their behaviours. Optimizing or maximizing behaviour means generating more gain for the concerned authorities with limited amount of resources. So in this type of economic social science people came to know how to utilize the limited resources to reach the targeted result. For example for an individual household it is like distributing their limited resource (income) into several household goods and services to gain maximum satisfaction for the all family members. It’s very hard for the households to decide (what to buy and how much to buy?) to maximize their satisfaction level. Three economic systems are Capitalist Economy or free market economy, Socialist Economy or state-run economy and mixed economy or public sector economy. Examples of free market economy are United States Economy. For socialist economy or command economy example can be North Korean economy and for mixed economy it can be United Kingdom’s Economy. In a free market economy capitalist society runs with the method of free organization network. Government’s role in this economy is like- Whenever government get a chance to promote competition it does that. Clear all the restrictions for the organizations to operate in a free market. To control the free competitions government should intervene with the market time to time. Sometimes government interventions motivate free market economy so that other way it wouldn’t be possible. In a command economy government role in it is very prominent and strict. For c apitalist economy where government had minimum role in the economy but for socialist one government plays a huge role regarding markets rules and regulations. Nations with this system not only dislike free economic systems but also they made strict law against it. In this system all the productions units and natural resource are controlled by government and no private organizations are allowed to do that. Another economic system where simultaneously free economic system and socialist economic system works is known as mixed economy. There two sectors private and public resides simultaneously. Here private sector can work as a free market entity in broader economic and political restrictions. Main four questions for any economy is ‘what to produce’, ’how to produce’, ’when to produce’ and ’whom to produce’. All the country cannot produce everything by them. Resources are limited and fixed in this world. If a country wants to produ ce everything by them then that country will not going to make a single thing perfectly and because of lack of resources in middle of the work everything will be stopped or jeopardise. P5 To acquire certain economic goal government policies regarding taxation, current account deficits, subsidiaries and other financial matters which are under government’
